JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra emphasized that until now there has been no direction or discussion regarding the granting of amnesty to former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Anwar Makarim.

Yusril said the government respected the legal process which was still ongoing and had not received any proposals regarding the granting of amnesty to Nadiem.

"There has been no discussion or proposal at all. If amnesty, abolition, and rehabilitation are entirely the rights of the President," said Yusril as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, July 2.

He made the statement in response to a question about the possibility of President Prabowo Subianto granting amnesty to Nadiem, as he had previously granted abolition to former Trade Minister Thomas Trikasih Lembong.

According to Yusril, there has been no discussion on the Nadiem case because the judicial process is still ongoing. After the first instance court's verdict, the defendant still has the right to pursue legal action, including appealing.

He said that during the trial, the prosecutor and the legal advisory team had the same opportunity to present evidence and witnesses to prove their respective arguments before the panel of judges.

"From the prosecutor's office, there is not much effort to build an opinion. Meanwhile, from Mr. Nadiem's side through social media or mass media, there are many opinions that are formed," said Yusril.

Previously, Nadiem was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the corruption case for the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) in the Ministry of Education and Culture period 2019-2022.

In addition to imprisonment, he was sentenced to a fine of Rp1 billion subsider 190 days in prison and was required to pay compensation of Rp809.59 billion subsider five years in prison.

The panel of judges also stated that his actions had caused a financial loss to the state of IDR 1.56 trillion.
