JAKARTA - The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, announced that the evacuation process of thousands of sailors from ships stranded in the Persian Gulf had begun.

"We will start implementing the evacuation plan for more than 11,000 sailors who are still stranded in the region. This massive operation will be carried out through close cooperation with Iran, Oman, all other coastal countries in the region, the United States and the maritime industry," said Dominguez as quoted by ANTARA from Sputnik, Wednesday, June 24.

He noted that IMO had provided all the necessary security guarantees and was confident that the current conditions would allow ships to pass safely.

On June 18, Iran and the US had signed a memorandum remotely to end the military conflict that has been ongoing since February 28.

The MoU also set a deadline for the US to lift the naval blockade, as well as for Iran to restore navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

In addition, Iran is also committed not to acquire nuclear weapons, while issues related to its nuclear program will be resolved through a separate agreement.

Both parties are expected to negotiate on this issue over the next 60 days. For Iran, the main goal is the lifting of a series of sanctions imposed on it.
