DEPOK - The University of Indonesia (UI) has imposed sanctions on 15 students who were proven to be involved in an electronic-based sexual harassment case in the UI Faculty of Law environment.

The decision was made after the campus completed the investigation process thoroughly by prioritizing the protection of the victim.

The sanctions were imposed based on the recommendation of the UI Prevention and Handling of Violence Task Force (PPK Task Force). The form of punishment given varies, ranging from administrative sanctions to academic suspension according to the level of violation committed by each student.

Director of Public, Media, Government, and International Relations of UI, Erwin Agustian Panigoro, said the campus had examined 16 people suspected of being involved in the case.

From the results of the investigation, 15 students were found to have violated the rules, while another person was not proven to be involved. "Of the 16 people who were examined, 15 people were found to have violated the rules and one person was not proven to have violated the rules," said Erwin in an official statement received, Thursday, June 4.

UI imposed different sanctions on the perpetrators based on the level of involvement and violations committed.

A total of three students were sanctioned with a suspension for three semesters. In addition, seven students were given a suspension for two semesters and four other students were given a suspension for one semester. Meanwhile, one student was only given a minor administrative sanction.

The campus also emphasized that the harshest sanctions in the form of termination of student status could be applied if violations with a more serious level were found in accordance with applicable regulations.

In addition to receiving academic punishment, all students who are proven to have committed violations are required to undergo psychological counseling as part of coaching and behavioral recovery. They are also required to take special courses containing materials on the prevention and handling of sexual violence in the educational environment.

This step was taken as part of the campus' efforts to increase student awareness of the importance of respecting the rights and dignity of every individual. The University of Indonesia emphasized that all decisions had been taken objectively, proportionally, and in accordance with the applicable procedures.

The campus hopes that the firm action against the perpetrators can be a lesson for all academic staff and strengthen the commitment to create a safe, comfortable, and free educational environment from all forms of sexual violence.

UI also emphasized that it would continue to strengthen the prevention and handling system of sexual violence cases in order to provide maximum protection to all students and campus residents.
