JAKARTA - Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed Hungary's refusal to provide military aid to Ukraine, saying peace would be reached sooner if other countries took similar steps.
At a press conference in Astana, Kazakhstan, Peskov praised Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar's statement that his party would not send weapons or military equipment to Ukraine.
"If all countries make such a decision, peace will come sooner," Peskov said, quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Friday, May 29.
He said any refusal to "pour gasoline on the fire" deserves support.
Magyar earlier wrote on social media after the NATO meeting that Hungary remained a reliable partner but was not supplying weapons or military equipment to Ukraine.
Peskov also welcomed reports of the interest of a number of European officials to restore contacts with Russia.
According to him, dialogue is still important even though relations between Russia and the European Union are tense.
"The biggest stupidity that the Europeans and the officials (of the European Union) in Brussels have done is to completely reject any dialogue with Russia," he said.
"It is impossible to discuss and solve problems without dialogue," Peskov said.
Ahead of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) summit in Astana, Peskov also said member states welcomed Uzbekistan's growing interest in the economic bloc.
According to him, closer cooperation can bring economic benefits to Uzbekistan and contribute to regional development.
Peskov also said Russia had not received a response from Armenia regarding plans to temporarily restrict imports of a number of Armenian agricultural products.
The Russian agricultural watchdog earlier announced that starting Friday, Russia will impose temporary restrictions on the import of certain types of Armenian fruits and vegetables on the grounds of repeated phytosanitary violations.
He added that no separate meetings were scheduled between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Deputy PM Mher Grigoryan during the EAEU Summit, although informal contacts could take place on the sidelines of the event.
