Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs: BRICS is Responsible for Playing an Active Role while Building an International Order that Contributes to Chaos

JAKARTA - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Sugiono reminded BRICS of their responsibility to play an active role in maintaining peace and preserving the rules, while the development of the international order contributes to chaos.

This was conveyed by Foreign Minister Sugiono at the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting (FMM) in New Delhi, India, Thursday (14/5).

Foreign Minister Sugiono said the world was at a crossroads, as conflicts, geopolitical rivalries and rapidly evolving challenges "reveal the global system is in dire need of reform."

"Unilateral actions and the selective application of international law are deepening mistrust and widening imbalances in global governance," said Foreign Minister Sugiono, launching a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (15/5).

The Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs further said, "We live in an era when those who build the international order also contribute to its chaos."

"As a rising power in the Global South, BRICS has the position and responsibility to take a more active role in maintaining peace and preserving the rules that support global stability," said the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

"This starts with fighting for international law in a fair, consistent, and without double standards," he continued.

"No country is above the law," said the Indonesian Foreign Minister.

In connection with this, the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs also conveyed the importance of protecting the International Court of Justice from selective enforcement of the law and political interference, as well as empowering the UN Security Council to carry out its mandate effectively.

"This also requires meaningful global governance reform, including greater representation of Southern countries in the UN Security Council, so that international institutions better reflect today's geopolitical reality," said the Indonesian Foreign Minister.

In the economic field, the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs warned that the multilateral trading system was increasingly eroded by unilateral protectionist measures and the use of disproportionate tariffs.

This is considered by Foreign Minister Sugiono to disrupt the global supply chain and limit global growth.

"BRICS has an important role in maintaining a fair, open, and non-discriminatory trade system, with the WTO at its core," said Foreign Minister Sugiono.

During this BRICS foreign ministers meeting, the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs also highlighted the conflict that caused trillions of dollars to be spent on war and destruction, with hundreds of billions of dollars needed for reconstruction.

"This situation is not something that cannot be avoided. This is a predictable result of a choice that prioritizes power over diplomacy," the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs reminded.

"With our collective weight, comes a collective responsibility: to be part of the solution, not part of the polarization," he continued.

"Indonesia is ready, together with other BRICS members, to help shape a more peaceful, just, and safer world for all," concluded Foreign Minister Sugiono.
