JAKARTA - Researcher at the Limnology and Water Resources Research Center, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Triyanto said that the sapu-sapu fish that live in the Indonesian freshwater ecosystem have heavy metals that are dangerous if consumed in excessive amounts.

Triyanto said the negative impact of heavy metals contained in the fish was only felt in the human body if the human consumed up to eight kilograms of fish meat per week, in the long term.

"So people who have already consumed or don't know (have) eaten siomai containing fish meat, don't worry, don't worry," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, April 30.

However, Triyanto emphasized that he did not take the consumption of sapu-sapu fish meat lightly.

As a researcher, he asked the public to be aware of the fish meat of the fish that is often used by unscrupulous traders.

"The important thing is that we care more. We ask the seller, 'I'm sorry, sir, is this meat healthy or not?', that's it," he said.

Triyanto also said that sapu-sapu fish is the same as other fish that contain protein, carbohydrates, and fat that are indeed needed by humans.

However, he said that there was almost no clean sapu-sapu fish, because of its natural nature of eating everything, including absorbing heavy metals.

Triyanto explained that heavy metals will not come out through the excretion process in the form of feces, but instead enter the liver through the digestive tract, and then become meat because of the protein that binds heavy metals.

"Heavy metals are bioaccumulative, they will not decrease. But because it has been transferred to clean water, (the content) will not increase. Well, as long as it is controlled in clean water, (heavy metals) that have been absorbed remain there," said Triyanto.
