JAKARTA - The Ministry of Forestry together with the Indonesian Navy (AL) and the National Police have succeeded in dismantling the practice of illegal cross-island timber trade in East Kalimantan by designating the warehouse manager of the PS alias R as the main suspect.
Head of the Forestry Law Enforcement Agency (Gakkum) for Kalimantan Region, Leonardo Gultom, said that PS alias R was named a suspect, as the person in charge of the warehouse suspected of being a shelter for illegal wood from illegal logging.
"The suspect is threatened with a maximum sentence of imprisonment for up to 15 years and a maximum fine of Rp. 2.5 billion," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, April 23.
He explained that the PS was secured by officers on Tuesday (21/4), on Jalan Soekarno Hatta Km 8 Samarinda-Balikpapan after investigators had previously examined F (24) who was secured by the Balikpapan Navy Base Team (Lanal) for transporting ulin type wood accompanied by a Certificate of Legal Validity of Forest Results (SKKSH) document allegedly not in accordance with the provisions of the law at the Balikpapan Semayang Port.
In addition to designating PS as a suspect, investigators also seized a truck loaded with illegal ulin wood with SKSHH documents that were suspected of not being in accordance with the provisions.
The Balikpapan Marine Team handed over further handling to the Kalimantan Regional Forestry Gakkum Office, which then collaborated with Balikpapan Marine and the Kaltim Regional Police's Ditreskrimsus to trace the origin of the transported wood.
The investigators then managed to find the location of the wood storage in a wood warehouse in Loa Janan, Kota Samarinda, which was managed by PS.
Leonardo stated that his party would not stop at the appointment of one suspect only.
He has ordered investigators to continue to develop the handling of this case to uncover other perpetrators involved in the illegal timber trade network.
"This success is the fruit of a solid synergy between the Forestry Gakkum, the Indonesian Navy, and the National Police. We will continue to take firm action against the illegal transportation of forest products in order to maintain forest sustainability," said Leonardo.
