JAKARTA - Amnesty International highlighted the sharp deterioration of global human rights conditions in its annual report released Tuesday, April 21. The organization said the weakening of the international legal order was triggered by the actions of a number of powerful countries, with Israel, Russia, and the United States (US) as the main focus.

Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard said the world is facing a serious setback in human rights protection, as the international system that has been the foundation of the post-World War II era changes direction.

"The global environment in which primitive violence can flourish has long been in place," Callamard said in the report.

He assessed that by 2025 there was a significant shift from the international system that was built after the Holocaust. The system, despite its shortcomings, has for decades served as a support for global human rights protection, but is now considered increasingly fragile.

At a press conference in London, Callamard also highlighted the role of world leaders, namely Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and US President Donald Trump, who were considered to have a major impact on the worsening global situation.

According to him, the actions of the leaders triggered a domino effect in various countries.

"This allows for multiplier imitators around the world, so the situation we are facing now is much more aggressive than a few years ago," he said.

Amnesty also criticized the attitude of a number of countries which were considered not firm against human rights violations, even tending to be permissive.

"Some are even thinking of emulating the oppressors," Callamard said.

In a report of more than 400 pages, Amnesty documented various human rights violations in many countries, ranging from restrictions on civil liberties, repression of the opposition, to gender-based violence.

Global conflicts are the main concern, including Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip, Russia's military operations in Ukraine, as well as US military action with Israel against Iran, which is considered to ignore international law.

In addition, Amnesty also highlighted the increasing practice of authoritarianism in various countries. However, the report notes that Spain is one of the countries that is relatively vocal in criticizing Israel's actions in Gaza.

Britain is also in the spotlight regarding the handling of the Palestinian solidarity movement, including the legal process against the Palestine Action group which is labeled as a terrorist organization.

Amnesty stressed that current global trends show an increase in authoritarian practices and a weakening of commitments to human rights principles, which could worsen the international situation if it is not immediately responded to decisively by the global community.
