JAKARTA - President Masoud Pezeshkian stressed the importance of diplomacy, as the two-week ceasefire between Iran and the United States ends this week.
Iranian President Pezeshkian said on Monday that every rational and diplomatic path should be used to reduce tensions with the US, but added that vigilance and mistrust in interactions with Washington were "an undeniable necessity," according to the state news agency IRNA, as reported by Al Arabiya from Reuters (20/4).
A two-week ceasefire between Iran and the US will end on Wednesday, with US representatives scheduled to arrive in Islamabad for negotiations with Iran on Monday. Meanwhile, Tehran has not announced whether it will send a delegation to Pakistan.
Iranian state television quoted an anonymous source as saying there were no plans for a second round of negotiations because of the "excessive and irrational" demands of the US and its change of attitude.
The two sides are at loggerheads over the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has tightened control over maritime transit, as the US continues to blockade Iranian ports and on Sunday detained a ship trying to bypass the US blockade.
President Pezeshkian said the US blockade showed Washington was moving towards "a repetition of previous patterns and a betrayal of diplomacy," according to state television.
Both Iran and the US have accused each other of violating the ceasefire announced two weeks ago, following the Israeli and US attacks on Iran on February 28 which led to an escalation in the Middle East.
