JAKARTA - The US President Donald Trump's administration expects the Iranian national football team to travel to the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Politico reported, citing White House Task Force Executive Director Andrew Giuliani.
"I'm not going to speak on behalf of the Iranian team, but I can say the president, when I spoke to him, has invited the Iranian team here," Giuliani told the media, Thursday (16/4).
"The president of FIFA (Gianni Infantino) also made a statement, I think, yesterday, they will come. So we expect them to be present," he added.
US officials are planning Iran's participation even though geopolitical tensions are still ongoing, according to the report.
The Iranian team is expected to arrive in the United States on June 10 to train in Tucson, Arizona, before continuing to Los Angeles for matches against New Zealand and Belgium, then to Seattle to face Egypt, Giuliani said.
He also added that his working group hopes for a friendly match between Iran and Puerto Rico before the World Cup.
In March, CBS News reported Trump told FIFA representatives the Iranian soccer team would be accepted to participate in the World Cup in the United States.
The competition will be attended by 48 teams and co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, which will take place from June 11 to July 19.
