It Turns Out That Chlorine Gas Has Poisoned Dozens Of Residents Warga

KARAWANG - The Department of Environment and Hygiene (DLHK) of Karawang Regency, West Java, revealed the cause of poisoning experienced by dozens of residents around PT Pindo Deli Pulp And Paper Mills II. The poisoning occurred due to leaking chlorine gas cylinders at the factory.

Head of DLHK Karawang Regency, Wawan Setiawan, said that one unit of chlorine gas cylinder was leaking, allegedly because the tube cap was unable to withstand pressure.

As a result of the incident, dozens of residents living around the PT Pindo Deli Pulp And Paper Mills II factory or in Cigempol Village, Kutamekar Village, Ciampel District were poisoned on Thursday, June 3.

Wawan said the leak of a chlorine gas cylinder unit was revealed after a team from DLHK Karawang conducted field verification.

"It is true that there was a gas leak at the location. But from some information and evidence in the field, the gas leak occurred because one unit of chlorine gas cylinder had a leak in the lid," he said, quoted by Antara, Sunday, June 6.

According to him, one unit of the leaking chlorine gas cylinder belonged to a consumer of PT Pindo Deli 2 which was in the process of being filled. When filled, the chlorine gas leaks.

Wawan said that the gas leak did not last long, only lasted for about half an hour. However, as a result, dozens of residents were poisoned by gas.

The specifications for the leaking tube are 1.8 meters in size, 60 centimeters in diameter, 600 kilograms in weight, and 900 kilograms in chlorine gas.
