MAGETAN - A building of the Elementary School (SDN) 2 Bendo in Bendo Village, Bendo District, Magetan Regency, East Java, collapsed after being hit by heavy rain last night.

The Magetan Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) said the building collapsed allegedly due to the condition of the structure which had been weathered and the age of the building was old.

Head of the Magetan Regency BPBD Eka Radityo said there were no casualties in the incident. However, the collapsed building material fell on a resident's truck parked next to the school.

"The truck suffered moderate damage to several parts of the vehicle body due to the collapse of the building," Eka said in a statement, Antara, Monday, April 13.

The truck was known to belong to Iskandar (55), a resident of Bendo Village.

After receiving reports from residents on Sunday evening, the BPBD immediately deployed the Rapid Response Team (TRC) and Pusdalops-PB to the location to conduct data collection and initial assessment.

"We immediately coordinated with the school, residents, and Magetan Disdikpora for further handling steps," said Eka.

The cleaning of building materials was carried out on Monday (13/4) morning starting at 08.00 WIB with the involvement of BPBD personnel, the school, and residents around through volunteer work.

As an emergency anticipation step, the area around the collapsed building was immediately sterilized. Officers installed safety nets so that residents, especially children, did not approach the location to avoid the risk of being hit by subsequent debris.

BPBD also appealed to the people of Magetan to increase vigilance against the potential of hydrometeorological disasters during the transition from the rainy season to the dry season.

Based on BPBD data, throughout March 2026, there were 84 recorded disasters and incidents in the Magetan area, dominated by extreme weather, landslides, flash floods, to evacuation search and rescue.
