JAKARTA - The Kremlin said the Russian president is ready to help efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East, following a deadlock in negotiations between the United States and Iran at the weekend in Pakistan.
The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his readiness to help mediate efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East during a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
"Vladimir Putin confirmed his readiness to continue to facilitate efforts to find a political and diplomatic solution to the conflict, and to mediate efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in the Middle East," the Kremlin said in its official statement on the phone call, reported TASS (13/4).
As previously reported, negotiations between Iran and the United States held in Islamabad, Pakistan on Saturday were deadlocked due to differences between the two parties.
The Iranian delegation was led by the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and was accompanied by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Meanwhile, the US delegation was led by Vice President JD Vance and was accompanied by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
The talks come after a two-week ceasefire was announced by both sides last week, bringing a glimmer of hope to the conflict-torn Middle East.
Tensions broke out in the Middle East on February 28, following a US and Israeli attack on Iran, which has so far killed more than 1,340 people, including the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as well as a number of senior officials and military leaders.
The State of the Mullahs retaliated by targeting Israeli territory and facilities related to the United States in a number of countries in the Middle East region. Israel also strictly restricts the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth or about 20 percent of the world's oil and LNG traffic passes every day.
