JAKARTA - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke with US President Donald Trump to discuss practical steps to restore shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the British prime minister's office.

On Thursday, Starmer made an official visit to Qatar after visiting Saudi Arabia the day before.

He visited the Gulf states immediately after the announcement of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

"The Prime Minister spoke to President Trump from Qatar," said PM Starmer's office, quoted by Sputnik.

"The Prime Minister conveyed the results of his discussions with Gulf leaders and military planners in the region on the need to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the UK's efforts to bring together partners to agree on a plan that can be implemented."

"The leaders discussed the need for a practical plan to resume sailing as soon as possible. They agreed to speak again soon," the office added.

Starmer also held talks with the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi.

"The Prime Minister welcomed the ceasefire and urged all parties to cooperate to ensure that the ceasefire is upheld and turned into lasting peace in the region," according to the office.

"Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, leaders discussed the need to encourage the free flow of goods to support global supply chains," the office added.

In addition, several parties agreed to continue to strengthen cooperation between the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.

On Tuesday night, US President Donald Trump said he had agreed to a two-week bilateral ceasefire with Iran, and confirmed that Iran had also agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's Supreme National Security Council later said Tehran would begin talks with the US on Friday in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
