MUI Emphasizes US-Iran Peace Does Not Mean Without Stopping Violence in Lebanon and Palestine

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) responded positively to the initiative of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran mediated by Pakistan. This de-escalation step is considered an important turning point for geopolitical security and the recovery of the world economy.

Chairman of the MUI for Foreign Relations and International Cooperation, Prof. Dr. Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, stated that this agreement is an effort to present broad global interests.

Appreciation for Pakistan and the Courage of Iranian Diplomacy

MUI expressed high appreciation to the Pakistani government for successfully mediating between the two parties amid a challenging domestic situation.

"Thank you to the Pakistani government for this important decision for de-escalation and global economic stability. We also appreciate the Iranian government for its sincere diplomatic steps," said Prof. Sudarnoto in his official statement received by VOI.

According to him, Iran's willingness to negotiate without sacrificing sovereignty is a valuable lesson for Muslim countries. He called Iran's position in the negotiations as a "proportional victory" in maintaining national dignity through peaceful means.

Beware of Potential Betrayal and Sheepherding

Although welcoming, MUI reminded of the risk of betrayal of the agreement. Prof. Sudarnoto emphasized the need for strict international monitoring mechanisms.

"History shows that violations of agreements can occur through unilateral interpretations or veiled actions. We must be alert to the efforts of America and Israel who may use this moment to divide Muslims," he said.

In particular, MUI highlights the importance of maintaining the safety of the implementation of the Hajj this year so that it remains sterile from agitation or attempts to fight from any party.

The Impact of US Domestic Politics and the Fate of Donald Trump

In terms of international politics, this ceasefire is predicted to affect Donald Trump's political position. If this agreement succeeds in easing the conflict without open war, it can increase Trump's political legitimacy at home.

"This success has the potential to dampen political discourse such as impeachment, although the internal dynamics of America remain complex and depend on the consistency of the implementation of the agreement," added Prof. Sudarnoto.

Demand to Stop Israeli Aggression in Gaza and Lebanon

Closing his statement, MUI emphasized that peace should not use double standards. The US-Iran ceasefire must be a momentum to stop all forms of violence by Israel in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.

"The United States must show moral responsibility to pressure Israel to stop the aggression. It is unacceptable if peace is sought on one side, while oppression continues on the other side. Justice must be consistently upheld," he concluded.
