APAU KAYAN - A bridge made of log wood in Sungai Boh District, Malinau Regency, North Kalimantan (Kaltara), collapsed on Tuesday (7/4) evening.

The incident occurred at Kilometer 31 on the connecting road from Long Apung, South Kayan District to Mahak Village, Sungai Bho District. As a result, the land transportation access was paralyzed.

One of the local residents, Amai Alan said, the incident was known to residents in the morning when they passed by the location.

"The collapse of the bridge makes vehicles unable to pass, the bridge body looks collapsed with a large hole in the middle due to broken logs," said Alan, Wednesday, April 8.

He said that the bridge has been the main access for the community for daily mobility, including the distribution of basic necessities.

"The condition of the bridge which has been long and weather factors are suspected to be the cause of the damage until it finally collapsed," he explained.

As a result of this incident, the activities of residents in the Apau Kayan area were disrupted. In fact, the bridge is used by border residents to travel to the Long Bagun, Mahakam Ulu (Mahulu), East Kalimantan area.

"We hope that there will be a quick handling from the government, considering that the route is a vital access connecting between regions," he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of Kayan Hulu Sub-district, Stim Ala, emphasized that the poor condition of road and bridge infrastructure in the border area was due to the lack of government attention in recent years.

"For the past three years, the condition of roads and bridges has often not received attention, both from the central government and the Kaltara Province. So now the damage is very severe, plus some bridges are broken because they only use log wood," he said.

He was also worried that if it was not immediately addressed, this damage would have a serious impact on the availability of fuel oil (BBM) and the basic needs of the community.

"I am worried that if there is no immediate handling of the damage to the roads and bridges that are currently cut off, there will be a shortage of fuel and basic necessities," he continued.

Stim Ala also hopes for serious attention from the central government through the Ministry of PUPR and the provincial government to immediately take concrete steps.

"We hope that the central government, in this case the Ministry of PUPR and the provincial government, will immediately find a solution. This is to prevent the occurrence of fuel and basic necessities shortages in border areas, especially Apau Kayan which includes four sub-districts, namely Kayan Hulu, Kayan Selatan, Kayan Hilir, and Sungai Boh," he said.

He added that if there was no handling in the near future, the wider impact would be felt by the community soon.

"My estimate is that if it is not handled immediately, in the next two to three weeks there will be a shortage of basic foodstuffs and fuel," he concluded.
