JAKARTA - The operator of the East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) last month launched Japan's first freight service using the Shinkansen bullet train, with the aim of quickly delivering goods such as fresh agricultural produce from the Tohoku region in the northeast to the Tokyo metropolitan area.

The freight service operated for the first time on March 23, with seven freight cars combined with the Tohoku Shinkansen passenger train, carrying about 800 boxes, which also included shells and precision machines.

"The advantage is its ability to deliver goods with minimal vibration and on time," a company official said, quoted by Kyodo News (1/4).

The train departs from the train depot in Morioka in the morning and arrives at the depot in Tokyo about four hours later.

The freight car is a modified car from the E3 series of high-speed trains that once operated on the Yamagata Shinkansen Line, according to JR East.

The white body of the car is decorated with pictures of the goods it carries, such as fresh agricultural products.

All passenger seats in the train car have been removed, and each car can carry between 10 to 25 trolleys, each capable of holding up to 120 kilograms of goods.

JR East said the items would not be loaded or unloaded at the station to avoid inconvenience to passengers.

The freight car is combined with the Yamabiko express train and operates on weekdays.
