JAKARTA - US Secretary of Defense (Menhan) Pete Hegseth has asked the US Army Chief of Staff, General Randy George, to resign.

The news comes from a Pentagon official who spoke on condition of anonymity to US television station CBS.

The official said the reason Hegseth asked George to step down was not yet known.

Different sources say that Hegseth wants a figure who can implement his vision with US President Donald Trump for the US Army.

Amid the news, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell issued a statement via X account that George "will retire from his post... effective immediately."

However, Parnell did not explain the specific reason why George, who still has more than one year of tenure, chose to retire.

George is one of the senior US military officers dismissed by Secretary of Defense Hegseth when the US was facing a war against Iran.

During his nearly four decades in the US military, George was recorded several times as being assigned to Iraq and Afghanistan with different positions, including as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army and senior non-commissioned officer to Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin during Joe Biden's presidency.

In February 2025, citing AFP, Hegseth also fired the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Charles "CQ" Brown without explanation.

Other senior officers who were fired included the head of the Navy and Coast Guard, the general who heads the National Security Agency, the deputy chief of staff of the Air Force, a Navy admiral assigned to NATO, and three prominent military lawyers.

The Air Force chief of staff also announced his resignation without explanation from the 2 years remaining in his term, while the head of US Southern Command suddenly retired a year after his term began.

Defense Secretary Hegseth, a former Fox News television host, claimed that President Trump only wanted a figure that the property billionaire wanted.

However, a number of members of parliament from the Democratic Party have sniffed out attempts to politicize the US military, which is normally neutral.
