JAKARTA - A surge in waste volume occurred in the Jabodetabek area after the long Eid al-Fitr holiday. In a number of areas, waste is seen piling up in settlements, Temporary Shelters (TPS), to public open spaces. This increase is triggered by the high consumption activity of the community during Lebaran, especially from household waste and disposable packaging.

This situation once again highlights the problem of waste management that has not been optimally handled. Sorting from the source is still limited, the transport capacity is not comparable to the volume of dumping, while the processing facilities are still minimal. The impact is that most of the waste still ends up in the Final Disposal Site (TPA) and adds pressure to the environment.

Nationally, this issue is also reflected in the high amount of waste generated each year. Data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) recorded that Indonesia's waste generation reached around 26 million tons per year. Most of them are still handled through burial in landfills, even in some areas still using open dumping methods that have the potential to pollute the environment.

Responding to this condition, the Secretary General of the Environmental Care Prabu, Rido Satriyo, assessed that the acceleration of the construction of waste processing facilities into electrical energy (PSEL) in the Jabodetabek area needs to be realized immediately.

"PSEL can be a strategic solution to reduce dependence on waste accumulation while utilizing waste as a source of energy," said Rido in a written statement.

Rido emphasized that the implementation of the PSEL project must be carried out transparently and accountable with strict supervision. He also emphasized the importance of emission control in PSEL operations, strengthening waste sorting education from sources, and enforcing illegal TPS in the Jabodetabek area.

According to him, collaboration between the government and the community is the key to realizing a more modern and sustainable waste management system.
