JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government through the Road Construction Service has started to install zebra crossings on Soepomo Street, Tebet, South Jakarta. There are a total of five crossing points that have been prepared, with four of them starting to be worked on on Monday, March 30 night.

This installation was carried out after the crossing facility in the area was previously unavailable, triggering the initiative of residents to paint the road voluntarily.

Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Office Heru Suwondo said that the presence of zebra cross is expected to increase the safety of road users, especially pedestrians.

"We hope that the presence of this zebra cross can support safer and orderly citizen mobility, as well as strengthen the culture of mutual respect on the road," said Heru in his statement, Tuesday, March 31.

He also apologized for the previous condition which had made it difficult for residents. According to him, the loss of the zebra cross mark occurred due to road maintenance work and pavement improvement at the end of 2025.

The new asphalt layer used in the process covered the old markings. In addition, high rainfall also hindered the process of reworking the road markings.

"It should be noted that the reinstallation of road markings cannot be carried out directly after paving. The thermoplastic marking material requires a road surface condition that has gone through the optimal drying period so that it can adhere well and have maximum durability," he explained.

On the other hand, Heru appreciated the steps of residents who had made zebra crossings independently. He assessed that it showed an increase in public awareness of safety in public spaces.

In the future, the self-made zebra cross will be rearranged by the DKI Provincial Government gradually so that it is in accordance with technical standards. Adjustments will be made by considering the field conditions, including the need for safety and traffic flow in the Soepomo Road area.

Previously, the action of residents who made a zebra cross with the Pac-Man game character on Jalan Soepomo, Tebet, South Jakarta, went viral on social media. The action was taken because residents considered the crossing facility at the location to be inadequate, because the zebra cross was only available on one side of the road.

Responding to this, the Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Data and Information Center, Siti Dinarwenny, emphasized that the creation of zebra crossings cannot be done carelessly and must still follow the applicable rules.

"We need to convey that the creation of road markings, including zebra crossings, must refer to the provisions of laws and regulations as well as applicable technical standards," said Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Data and Information Center, Siti Dinarwenny, in a statement, Sunday, March 29.

According to him, the standard is important to ensure the safety of all road users, both pedestrians and drivers.

"This is important to ensure the safety aspects of all road users, both pedestrians and motor vehicle drivers, and to prevent potential distractions that can interfere with driving concentration," said Wenny.
