JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission X of the House of Representatives, MY Esti Wijayanti, said he disagreed with the idea of learning activities for school students to be carried out online starting April 2026 due to the government's efficiency policy or energy saving strategy.

Learning from the experience of COVID-19, according to him, the online learning strategy is less effective for school students. He said the policy discourse needed to be studied in more depth.

"Online learning was once implemented when the COVID-19 outbreak occurred. And we all know that this system leaves a problem that is not simple for our educational world," said Esti in a written statement quoted by ANTARA, Monday, March 23.

The impact referred to includes challenges to children's ability to absorb the material, discipline, character formation, technological constraints, and so on.

"These things are not simple problems," said the legislator who deals with education affairs.

He explained that one of the impacts of distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic was learning loss, a phenomenon that arises when students are lazy to study and tend to forget their school.

The cognitive ability of students which has decreased after the online learning policy, he said, can be seen from several results of monitoring child development in Indonesia.

Apart from the lag in the academic field, such as the learning loss experienced by students, according to him, the distance learning system also has an impact on the psychological aspect, and the physical health of children.

"Online systems are difficult to apply lessons on affective aspects such as personality, attitude, and character," he said.

For this reason, he encouraged the government to find other solutions in anticipating the impact of global conditions. He emphasized that children's education should not be sacrificed because it can cause long-term impacts.

"There must still be the best alternative steps to overcome the economic problems due to the possibility of rising oil prices due to global conditions," he said.
