JAKARTA - The Chairman of the National Waste Coalition (KPNAS), Bagong, expressed his support for the government's program in strengthening the national waste management system, especially through the development of the Waste Processing into Electricity (PSEL) program.

"The strengthening of the waste management system based on modern technology needs to be accelerated in order to reduce the volume of waste piles at the final processing site while minimizing potential environmental risks," said Bagong, in a written statement, Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

Bagong's statement was made following the landslide of a waste pile in the Bantargebang TPST area which caused casualties and became a public concern regarding the condition of waste management in the area.

He assessed that the incident was an important reminder that the issue of waste is not only related to environmental cleanliness, but also concerns the safety of the community and workers who are active in waste management areas.

As a form of support for efforts to improve waste management, Bagong together with the KPNAS team carried out a waste sorting socialization activity for scavengers who are active in the Bantargebang TPST area.

The activity aims to provide an understanding of the importance of separating organic and inorganic waste from the beginning to increase the efficiency of the management process and reduce the accumulation of waste that has the potential to pose risks.

During the activity, Bagong emphasized that the scavenger community has an important role in the waste management chain because they have helped in the process of sorting materials that still have economic value.

With education on better waste sorting, it is hoped that it will support a more organized waste management system while strengthening the implementation of government policies related to reducing waste accumulation.

In addition to socialization activities, KPNAS also carried out social activities in the form of distributing food packages to scavengers in the Bantargebang area in the context of welcoming the Eid. The assistance was given as a form of concern for the community which depends on their livelihood from sorting waste activities in the area.

Bagong hopes that in the future, the synergy between the government, community organizations, and the waste picker community can be further strengthened to encourage safer, modern, and sustainable waste management. He also assessed that the acceleration of the construction of waste processing facilities based on technology such as PSEL is one of the strategic steps to reduce dependence on the waste disposal system while preventing the recurrence of similar events in the future.
