JAKARTA - A high school in Seodaemun District, Seoul, South Korea has installed 14 additional AI-powered (artificial intelligence) cameras equipped with algorithms that detect possible fights.

The cameras cover areas that were previously inaccessible, including playgrounds, garbage collection areas, and two elevator areas.

"Now there is no area that is not accessible," a school administrator said, as reported by The Korea Times on July 1.

This increased supervision is aimed at overcoming the decline in teacher authority and preventing extreme bullying.

To further secure the prohibited area, a virtual boundary set by the school at the entrance of the gymnasium roof will sound an alert if it is violated.

Traditional security cameras have long been criticized by educators for only providing evidence after the fact. Now, schools are racing to eliminate blind spots.

S-1, a security company, said sales of its video analytics systems - including AI-powered cameras given to schools - increased 74 percent from January to May compared with the same period last year.

The technology has also been adapted to protect smaller children. An elementary school in Seoul's Seongdong District installed six AI-powered cameras this year near the parking lot entrance connected to the students' route to school.

The cameras use algorithms designed to detect falls, triggering a loud alert in the control room if a student falls.

The school said this allows staff to immediately respond to major accidents involving younger children.

The operation of several AI-powered security cameras raises questions about student privacy, but the school defended the installation after extensive community discussions and limited to critical areas.

For now, the high anxiety over bullying in schools means hopes for student safety are far greater than the inconvenience of school surveillance.
