JAKARTA - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission coordinated with the Bandung Police to oversee the legal process related to the death of a student at SMAN 5 Bandung in Bandung City.
KPAI member Diyah Puspitarini said law enforcement officers were asked to immediately process the case in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
"We ask that law enforcement officers immediately process the law quickly in accordance with Article 59A of the Child Protection Law," Diyah said when contacted in Jakarta, Monday, March 16.
He emphasized that if during the investigation process there were criminal elements, the perpetrators must be sanctioned in accordance with the provisions of the law.
"Currently we are following the legal process, it is very possible that there are criminal elements. Whoever is involved, even if they are minors, will still be prosecuted in accordance with the Child Criminal Justice System Act and the Child Protection Act," he said.
KPAI also expressed deep concern over the incident that killed the student.
According to Diyah, his party had previously warned of the potential for conflict between students during Ramadan, especially after gathering activities such as breaking the fast together, tarawih, or before sahur.
"KPAI is very concerned about this incident. KPAI has warned at the beginning of Ramadan about the potential for disputes between students or groups of children that may occur after breaking fast, tarawih, or before sahur," he said.
From the results of coordination between the KPAI and the police, for the time being it is suspected that there was no direct clash between students of SMAN 5 Bandung and students of SMAN 2 Bandung.
The victim allegedly fell after participating in a joint fasting activity.
"This child seems to be avoiding SMAN 2 children, so he fell. The element of beating is still being investigated, but these children passed SMAN 2," said Diyah.
Previously, a student with the initials FA (17) from SMAN 5 Bandung died in the Cihampelas Street area on Friday (13/3) evening. The incident occurred after the victim attended a joint fasting event.
Currently, the Bandung Police are still conducting an investigation to uncover the chronology of the incident, including the possibility of an element of persecution in the incident.
