Minister of LH Hanif Faisol Instructs Toll Rest Areas to Have Waste Processing

JAKARTA - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has instructed that rest areas or rest areas on toll roads must have waste processing facilities.

"We ensure that by May all rest areas have waste processing facilities," he said, while reviewing the Mangkang Terminal, Semarang, Central Java, Sunday.

The review is the implementation of the Mudik Minim Sampah program ahead of Eid 2026 which aims to ensure that the terminal environment remains clean and the service to travelers runs well.

Not only terminals, he also continued a number of rest areas on toll roads entering the 2026 Lebaran homecoming flow.

"Some rest areas have provided facilities, but some are still 'slow to respond'," he said.

He said that the volume of waste generated at toll road rest areas has been quite large, namely close to half to one ton per day.

"This is heavy, big. If it is not improved or handled seriously, it will become an environmental problem, as well as a problem for the district city that the toll is passed through," he said.

Therefore, he said, his party has ordered the rest area managers to provide waste processing facilities by May 2026 at the latest.

"Which until May is not equipped (waste processing, red.), to him will be attached with a charge. We have announced all of this since yesterday we reviewed it," he said.

Meanwhile, for terminals, he said, waste management is asked to coordinate with the respective District/City Environmental Service (DLH) because the volume is relatively small.

"If the small ones like this, at least clean the environment first, and this is under the guidance of the Semarang City Environment Service," he said.

So, he said, his party did not force to provide waste processing facilities because it was only enough for waste sorting.

"That's enough because the volume is small. However, for mandatory rest areas, yes, because (the volume of garbage, ed.) on average almost approaches half a ton to 1 ton," he concluded.
