Earthquake Before Iftar, M 5.4 Shock Felt in Sukabumi to Garut

SUKABUMI - People in the Sukabumi area, West Java were surprised by the shock of a tectonic earthquake on Friday, March 13, early morning or before dawn. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the magnitude 5.4 earthquake occurred at 02.18 WIB.

Based on the results of the update analysis, BMKG determined that the epicenter was located in the sea at coordinates 8.04 degrees south latitude and 106.86 degrees east longitude, exactly 121 km southeast of Sukabumi Regency with a depth of 53 kilometers.

According to the Acting Director of Gempabumi and Tsunami BMKG, Rahmat Triyono, this earthquake is included in the shallow earthquake category.

"By taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred is a shallow earthquake due to subduction activity," said Rahmat in his official statement.

Source mechanism analysis shows that this earthquake has a strike-slip movement mechanism.

The tremors were felt quite strongly in various areas with varying intensity scales. IV MMI was felt in Cidolog, Ciracap, Tasikmalaya, Cijati, Garut. Then III MMI was felt in Bayah, Klapanunggal, Bandung Regency and II-III MMI was felt in Pangandaran and Ciamis.

BMKG emphasized that based on the results of the modeling, this earthquake has no potential for a tsunami. Until 02.50 WIB, the monitoring results also did not show any signs of aftershock activity.
