JAKARTA - The Spanish government has decided to withdraw its ambassador from Israel, according to the country's official sheet.
Wednesday's move comes as Spain has become one of the EU's main critics of Israel's genocidal war in Gaza and the new war against Iran launched by the United States and Israel.
"At the proposal of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European and Cooperation Affairs, and after consideration by the Council of Ministers at its meeting of March 10, 2026, I hereby order the termination of the appointment of Ana María Sálomon Pérez as Ambassador of Spain to the State of Israel," the official document said, as reported by Al Jazeera(11/3).
The Spanish embassy in Tel Aviv will be headed by a chargé d'affaires, a source at the Foreign Ministry said, according to Reuters.
The move marks the latest escalation in diplomatic relations between the two countries, which have been extremely tense since Israel launched its offensive on the Gaza Strip in October 2023.
The Israeli Embassy in Spain is also headed by a chargé d'affaires, after the country recalled its ambassador last May in protest at Spain's decision to recognize the State of Palestine, Al Arabiya reported.
It is known that the Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez, is one of the few left-wing leaders in Europe who condemned the US-Israeli attack on Iran as "unjustified" and said that Madrid's position was "not for war".
The Sanchez government is also one of the few European countries to consistently condemn Israel's actions in Gaza.
In October, the Spanish Parliament approved the enactment of a law on a total arms embargo against Israel, which permanently prohibits the sale of weapons, dual-use technology, and military equipment in response to the genocide.
