AMBON - The Ambon District Court Judges sentenced six defendants to various prison terms for selling firearms and ammunition to Papua.

"The defendants were sentenced to prison because they were legally and convincingly proven guilty of violating Article 1 paragraph (1) of the Emergency Law Number 12 of 1951 in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) 1 of the Criminal Code Article 338 in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) of the 1st KUHP," said the head of the panel of judges, Pasti Tarigan in Ambon, quoted by Antara, Thursday, June 3.

Two members of the National Police who served at the Ambon Island Police Station and PP Lease, namely San Herman Palijama alias Sandro (34) and Muhammad Romi Arwanpitu alias Romi (38) were sentenced to 7 years in prison.

Meanwhile, four other colleagues who are civilians, namely Sahrul Nurdin (39) were sentenced to 12 years in prison, and the defendants Ridwan Mohsen Tahalua (44), Handri Morsalim (43), and Andi Tanan (50) were given seven years in prison.

The panel of judges, led by Pasti Tarigan, accompanied by two members, Jenik Tulak and Ronny Feliks Wiusan, stated that the six defendants were found guilty of committing a crime by jointly receiving, surrendering, carrying, controlling, storing, hiding, using firearms and ammunition without rights.

There are also those who incriminate the defendants being sentenced to prison because their actions have disturbed the community. Then for the defendant Sahrul Nurdin was sentenced to alias recidivist and became the main perpetrator of the circulation of firearms, and the other two defendants were members of the National Police.

Meanwhile, the mitigating factor is that the defendants admit their actions and promise not to do it again.

The verdict handed down by the panel of judges was lighter than the demands made by the Public Prosecutor Eko Nugroho.

Initially, the prosecutor demanded two members of the National Police for 10 years in prison, while the other four colleagues were charged with various charges in which Sahrul Nurdin was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Meanwhile, Ridwan Mohsen Tahalua (44), Handri Morsalim (43) and Andi Tanan (50) were each sentenced to eight years in prison.
