JAKARTA - Cuban authorities have communicated with US officials after an alleged terrorist infiltration attempt involving a ship departing from US territory.

Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio said authorities intercepted a Florida-registered boat with 10 people on board who were suspected of attempting to enter Cuba for terrorist purposes.

"From the beginning, and after detecting that the ship was from the US territory, Cuban authorities have been in communication regarding this terrorist attempt with their partners in the US, including the Department of State and the Coast Guard," he said.

The investigation is ongoing, with Cuba seeking to exchange information with Washington, which it said showed a willingness to cooperate.

Authorities said the weapons seized on board included assault rifles, pistols, molotov bombs, night vision devices, ammunition and communications equipment, although details were still preliminary.

Fernandez de Cossio said Cuba had previously shared intelligence with the US on the suspected perpetrators based on UN Security Council Resolution 1373, as well as reaffirming Cuba's absolute and unequivocal commitment to the rejection of all acts, methods and practices of terrorism.

Havana, Wednesday, said it had intercepted a boat carrying 10 armed men who fired at border guards, killing four and wounding six others. The government described the incident as an attempted armed infiltration that was successfully thwarted.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington was conducting an independent investigation into the incident and stressed that US authorities would independently verify the details provided by Havana.
