JAKARTA - Malaysian Prime Minister (PM) Anwar Ibrahim said that the realization of Google's investment of 2 billion US dollars (about Rp33.5 trillion) in Malaysia is progressing very encouragingly and even exceeds initial estimates.
Anwar made the statement after a dialogue with Alphabet & Google President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat and her team via video teleconference from Malaysia on Thursday.
"I had a video call with Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet & Google, and his team. Among the topics discussed was the development of an investment of 2 billion US dollars by Google in Malaysia which was announced in May 2024," said Anwardalam in a press statement quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, February 26.
"This investment includes the construction and operation of the first Google data center and cloud computing services in Malaysia," he said.
He said the project is expected to generate an economic impact of US$3.2 billion (approximately Rp53.6 trillion) and create 26,500 job opportunities by 2030.
According to Anwar, Google's investment is a manifestation of continued confidence in the Malaysian digital economy ecosystem.
The investment, according to him, is in line with Malaysia's aspiration to emerge as a regional hub for secure data flows, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence innovation.
"The government remains consistent in facilitating and providing the necessary support platforms to ensure that the announced investments can be implemented quickly and effectively," he said.
Anwar welcomed Google's willingness to continue exploring additional investment opportunities in Malaysia in the future.
