JAKARTA - The Chinese government has expressed its criticism of the implementation of a new sanctions package by Britain against Russia related to the Ukrainian crisis.
"China opposes unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law or the authorization of the UN Security Council. We strongly regret the related measures from the UK," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning at a press conference in Beijing, Wednesday, February 25, reported by ANTARA.
On Tuesday (24/2), Britain announced nearly 300 new sanctions with their "largest" sanctions package, targeting Russia's important revenue streams, including the energy sector and military suppliers.
The British Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the sanctions, announced on the fourth anniversary of the Ukraine War, were the largest package of sanctions against Russia in this period.
"Regarding the Ukraine crisis, China has been promoting talks for peace and strictly controlling the export of dual-use goods. Normal exchanges and cooperation between China and Russia should not be disrupted or affected," added Mao Ning.
China, said Mao Ning, will do what is necessary to defend its legitimate and lawful rights and interests.
The sanctions package from the UK targets one of the world's largest oil companies, PJSC Transneft, which is responsible for transporting more than 80 percent of Russia's oil exports.
The new measures also target Russia's secret oil trading network, sanctioning 175 companies linked to the "2Rivers" oil group, one of the world's largest shadow fleet operators and a major trader of Russian crude.
The sanctions then targeted 49 entities and individuals, including international suppliers of Russian drones, components, and technology, as well as terrorists in the Russian liquefied natural gas sector.
In addition, nine banks that handle cross-border payments in Russia are also included in the sanctions package.
"Today, the UK has taken decisive action to disrupt critical funding, military equipment, and revenue streams that sustain Russia's aggression, in our largest series of measures since the early months of the invasion," said British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.
"Today I am in Kiev announcing £30 million in funding to strengthen Ukraine's energy resilience and support recovery, bringing total UK support to £21.8 billion since the start of the war," he said.
He said Britain would continue to support the Ukrainian people and defend European security, because "Ukrainian security is our security."
