JAKARTA - The head of the Tual Police, AKBP Whansi Des Asmoro, underwent surgery after being hit by an arrow in his left leg while trying to defuse a clash between two groups of residents in Fiditan Village, Tual City, Maluku, Tuesday (24/2).
"Today the Police Chief underwent surgery to remove the arrow on his left leg, hopefully the surgery will go smoothly and he will be healed soon," said Head of Public Relations of the Maluku Police, Kombes Rositah Umasugi, as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, February 25.
The clashes, which have been ongoing since Tuesday afternoon, involved young people from Fiditan Kampung Lama and Fiditan Kampung Baru, who initially attacked each other with sharp weapons, such as bows and machetes, and the throwing of molotov bombs.
The situation was heated on the main road of Fiditan Village until the police officers went directly to the location to quell the riots.
Whansi Police Chief Des Asmoro was injured when an arrow flew and hit his left leg in the middle of an effort to separate the two warring groups.
He was then evacuated to the Karel Sadsuitubun Langgur Hospital for further medical treatment.
Apart from the police chief, a number of residents were also injured by arrows and stone throwing during the clashes.
Currently, after the incident, security at the border of the two villages has been formed a joint security post consisting of the TNI and the Police, then assisted by the Maluku Tenggara Police with 100 personnel.
"The situation so far has been conducive, we from the police appeal to the public in general and especially those who are at the scene of the crime in Tual, namely Fiditan Village, to refrain from doing things that cause kamtibmas disturbances," he said.
Previously, tensions between residents in Fiditan Village began to be seen since Sunday (22/2) evening and increased on the day of the incident due to disputes between groups of young people which then developed into an action of mutual attack using sharp weapons.
This situation is not spontaneous, tensions had been going on for several days before the outbreak of a major clash that injured the Police Chief.
To control the situation, hundreds of joint personnel from the National Police and TNI were deployed to the location. The apparatus also used tear gas in an effort to disperse the masses who did not subside.
Until now, the security situation in Fiditan Village has reportedly returned to being conducive although the police are still on alert to prevent subsequent conflicts.
Persuasive approaches and intensive communication with local community leaders are also being carried out as part of steps to restore inter-community relations after the clash incident.
