JAKARTA - More than 70 tigers have reportedly died "mysteriously" this month in a tiger park in the northern region of Thailand.
At the privately run Tiger Kingdom Chiang Mai park, management imposed a two-week closure after the death occurred. An investigation has also been launched.
The provincial livestock official stated that the facility prohibited all unauthorized access and began to carry out thorough disinfection in the park area, while laboratory tests on the tiger carcass were still ongoing.
As reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Saturday, February 21, the death of the tiger was reported to have started on February 8. The initial suspicion led to raw chicken meat being used as feed for the animal.
However, authorities said the exact cause of the many deaths was still uncertain.
The surviving tiger has been moved to a park-owned care centre in Mae Taeng District, northern Chiang Mai Province, for close monitoring.
Director of the Regional Office of the Protected Area, Kritsayarm Kongsatri, said the large number of deaths in a short time was an extremely unusual event.
