Dog Meat Free Indonesia (DMFI) held a peaceful action entitled "Love Letter to the DPR" in front of the DPR/MPR RI Building, Jakarta, to urge the acceleration of the enactment of the Animal Protection Bill (RUU), Thursday, February 12.
This action is a public appeal for the country to immediately present a firm legal umbrella to stop the trade and consumption of dog and cat meat.
The activity was attended by activists, academics, public health activists, and residents who claimed to be affected by illegal trade practices. Participants expressed their aspirations peacefully through symbolic actions, pantomime performances, and the signing of a petition.
COO of JAAN Domestic and representative of DMFI, drh. Merry Ferdinandez, said that the enactment of the Animal Protection Bill was urgent because the practice of trading dog and cat meat still occurs in a number of regions and involves cross-regional networks.
"We come with a peaceful approach, bringing the voices of the people who want to see Indonesia have clear and firm regulations to protect animals while maintaining public health," Merry said in his statement, Wednesday, February 18.
According to him, based on the findings and field investigations conducted by the coalition, the trade practice often involves the theft of pets and delivery without adequate health procedures. Animals are transported in unsuitable conditions and without veterinary supervision.
"This trade is not only a matter of animal welfare, but also concerns public health risks. The shipment from rabies endemic areas without quarantine and health checks has the potential to expand the spread of zoonotic diseases," he said.
Merry emphasized that dogs and cats are not included in the category of livestock for consumption in the national food system. Therefore, according to him, the meat distribution chain takes place without clear food safety standards.
"Without national regulation, law enforcement will continue to face limitations, especially against cross-provincial trading networks. The Animal Protection Bill is a strategic step to provide legal certainty," he said.
He hopes that the DPR RI can include discussion of the bill in the priority agenda of legislation and open a space for dialogue with various stakeholders. "We believe that change can be achieved through collaboration. This is not just an animal issue, but part of the nation's commitment to better human values, health, and legal governance," said Merry.
