JAKARTA - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto revealed his strategy to stop household waste piling up at temporary disposal sites or final disposal sites (TPA) by using micro-scale waste processing technology made by several domestic campuses.
Along with the implementation of various government priority programs such as free nutritious meals (MBG), people's schools (SR), red and white village cooperatives, and fishing villages, the problem of waste and environmental cleanliness has also become the focus of President Prabowo in recent weeks as carried out through the ASRI movement (safe, healthy, secure, and beautiful).
"Indonesia must dare to improve all fields, all sectors, including the cleanliness of every village, sub-district, city, regency, provincial capital, and the capital of the country. I ask that in the shortest possible time, we will prove it. I ask for garbage cleanliness," said President Prabowo when speaking at the Indonesia Economy Outlook (IEO) 2026 forum in Jakarta, quoted by Antara, Saturday, February 14.
Therefore, the President specifically thanked several universities in the country who are currently building micro-scale waste processing technology, which is planned to be used to process domestic waste at the village/subdistrict level.
"I thank several institutions of higher learning that have developed recycling tools, environmentally friendly waste disposal tools, which are not damaging, do not cause odor on a small scale. We hope that these tools are in every village, in every district, so that there is no need to go far to the landfill. Waste is resolved at the lowest level," said Prabowo.
The President then targeted that his plan could be realized in 2026.
"This we will implement this year as well. The big ones, we have to find the best technology, and we have started," continued the President.
The President's statement referred to the waste-to-energy project currently being worked on by Danantara together with regional governments.
Regarding the processing of micro-scale waste, the President this week received a report from the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto in a limited meeting at the Palace.
Brian explained that his ministry would accelerate the stages of its development, including the trial of the micro-scale processing technology. The target is that the trial can be carried out in several villages and villages this year.
"There are several technologies that have been discussed. We will soon choose. There is also (one) that will run together with Danantara so that later waste handling will also run at the micro level, at the village level, more effectively," said Brian.
Some of the waste processing technologies discussed include using the gasification method, then plasma-assisted, and cold plasma reactors. "We will examine again which is the best," he added.
The technology, Brian continued, will be designed to process up to 10 tons of waste, considering that the average waste generated at the village level reaches 10 tons per day.
