BMKG: Flood Rob has the potential to occur in a number of coastal areas

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected a New Moon phase phenomenon on February 17 that has the potential to increase the maximum sea level height that can trigger coastal flooding or rob in a number of regions in Indonesia.

BMKG Maritime Meteorology Director Eko Prasetyo explained the results of monitoring water level data or water level and tide prediction showed the potential for maximum tides that coastal communities needed to be aware of.

"This condition can have an impact on community activities around the port and coastal settlements, including loading and unloading activities, marine transportation, land fisheries, and salt ponds," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, February 11.

BMKG reported that the potential affected areas include the coasts of North Sumatra, Riau, Riau Islands, West Sumatra, Banten, DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, and Bali. Similar potential was also observed in West Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, Maluku, and North Maluku.

On the north coast of Java, the potential for rob is estimated to occur on February 12-19, 2026, including in the Jakarta, Semarang, Demak, Pekalongan, Kendal, Jepara, Tegal, Brebes, and surrounding areas. Meanwhile, in the Sumatra and Riau Islands, it has the potential to occur in mid- to late February 2026.

Eko emphasized that the potential of this rob is different in each region, depending on the coastal topography, local tides, and other meteorological factors such as wind and air pressure.

In this way, BMKG appeals to coastal communities to increase vigilance and adjust activities to the maximum tide conditions, and periodically monitor official information through government communication channels to anticipate possible impacts.
