JAKARTA - Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Monday that an air strike against Iran would not lead to the collapse of the Tehran regime.

"No, the regime will not collapse," Fidan said in a live interview with CNN Turkey when asked if the regime would collapse if such an attack were carried out with the aim of overthrowing it, quoted by Anadolu (10/2).

"I don't want to speculate on any particular scenario in Iran, but the regime will not change through air strikes or anything else. That's just a fantasy," he continued.

"What may happen is that the government weakens, the system weakens, and becomes incapable of providing services to the people. Then, the existing regime may choose to make a much more radical decision and may try to improve the situation," said Foreign Minister Fidan.

"The country can change," he said.

The statement was made as Iran and the US prepared for the next round of negotiations, which resumed in Oman last Friday after an almost eight-month suspension.

Emphasizing that the issue of Iran has dominated the international agenda, Foreign Minister Fidan stressed that the region cannot afford another war.

"Our president (Turkey) (Recep Tayyip Erdogan) also showed maximum sensitivity to this issue." Therefore, we want to use all available means to prevent the possibility of war," he said.

Further, Foreign Minister Fidan said that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had briefed him on the negotiations, noting that Ankara had also been in contact with the US side.

Describing the current tensions as a problem that "is difficult to resolve quickly," Foreign Minister Fidan still showed a clear willingness among the parties to continue negotiations.

He said the call for "more creative solutions" had gained traction and underlined the need to move away from "the threat of war."

"At the moment, it seems there is no immediate threat of war," Foreign Minister Fidan said, stressing that the door for negotiations has been opened.
