BALIKPAPAN - Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds hit Balikpapan City, East Kalimantan, Sunday, February 8, causing one person to die after being hit by the collapse of a collapsed house on Jalan 21 Januari, West Balikpapan District.

Two residents' houses suddenly collapsed to almost level with the ground at around 17.30 WITA. At the time of the incident, residents saw a traveling merchant sheltering in one of the houses.

The joint SAR team from Basarnas Balikpapan, TNI, and Polri immediately headed to the location to evacuate the victim. After searching under the rubble of the building, the victim was found dead because he was hit by the house frame.

The commander of the TNI Navy Post, Captain of the Sea (P) Komaruddin, said the victim was not a local resident, but only took shelter in a house that collapsed during the rain.

"For the victims, this is indeed a victim who is not the original people here, he is just taking shelter because of the rain so that this incident occurs," Komaruddin said in his explanation.

The evacuation process was carried out using a machine saw to cut the frame of the house that hit the victim's body. The body was then taken to Kanujoso Djatiwibowo Hospital in Balikpapan for further examination.

"In the evacuation, we used a chainsaw with Basarnas, so we cut it with our colleagues so that the victims could be evacuated quickly, then taken to Kanujoso Hospital," he said.

The location of the incident has now been cordoned off by the police, and the case is being handled by the West Balikpapan Police.
