JAKARTA - The membership dues scheme in the Board of Peace (BoP) has not yet been decided, including the amount of deposit, payment form, and category of membership of participating countries. The Indonesian government is still waiting and collecting views from a number of countries before the final mechanism is determined.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arif Havas Oegroseno said that discussions on the BoP fee were still in the early stages and required further in-depth discussions.
"It's still in the process. There are still more in-depth discussions," said Havas after accompanying President Prabowo Subianto's meeting with former foreign ministers and deputy foreign ministers at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Wednesday night, February 4.
According to Havas, until now the government has not discussed technical details related to the payment scheme, deposit time, and division of obligations of member countries in the Board of Peace.
"The issue of membership fees is still long in discussion, including later aspects such as payment problems and what their duties are in the Board of Peace," he said.
When asked about the target for the initial deposit, both in terms of time and nominal, Havas emphasized that this had not been discussed because Indonesia also wanted to see the approach taken by other countries.
"Technically it has not been discussed. What are the details, it is still in coordination, because we also want to see how the approach of other countries is," he said.
He also denied the assumption that Indonesia would immediately be included in a certain category or potentially be hampered by its membership if it did not pay its dues.
"Not really. This is still under discussion. Later the mechanism will be like what, the process is still long," said Havas.
Previously, there was information that to join the Board of Peace established by US President Donald Trump, participating countries were required to pay a fee of 1 billion US dollars or around Rp. 16.9 trillion.
Havas explained that the discussion of the dues cannot be separated from the formulation of the institutional structure of the Board of Peace which until now is also not final. Technically, the BoP will have an executive body and form a National Committee consisting of Palestinian technocrats.
"There is a National Committee whose content is technocrats from Palestine. They are not from certain political affiliations," he said.
Furthermore, Havas emphasized that Indonesia did not discuss the BoP fee scheme unilaterally. The government will continue to consult with the other seven Muslim countries, as well as work with eight countries to build a coordination platform related to the Palestinian and Middle East issues.
"So we are discussing this not alone. This is a joint work from these countries," he said.
Regarding the form of Indonesia's contribution to the Board of Peace, Havas said the government is still open to determining the sector of involvement, such as the health and food security sectors.
"We can choose later, for example on health issues or food issues. This is still in the process of discussion. We continue to talk to the other seven countries," said Havas.
