Lampung - The Lampung Regional Police has dismantled a case of alleged fraud in the guise of an illegal travel agency or illegal umrah travel that occurred in Lampung Regency.
"This case occurred in 2024 and the Lampung Police have arrested a suspect in this case," said Deputy Director of Special Crime of the Lampung Police AKBPYusriandi Yusrindilansir ANTARA, Wednesday, February 4.
The suspect with the initials PW played a role in establishing a company that was used as a cover for organizing umrah trips without official permission.
"The company was made to seem as if it was legal to attract public interest," he said.
In luring the victim, the suspect promoted and offered umrah services to the public. After the prospective pilgrims were interested, they were directed to communicate directly with the suspect.
"In carrying out his actions, PW is suspected of not working alone, but is assisted by his wife who is currently still in our pursuit," said Yusriandi.
In this case, the suspect's wife also played a role in convincing prospective pilgrims to use the umrah travel service.
"This modus has managed to make the victims believe and make payments. As a result of this act, as many as 10 victims suffered losses totaling Rp. 299 million," he said.
Until now, the police are still investigating the possibility of other victims from the illegal umrah travel service.
"In revealing this case, the police also secured a number of evidence, including promotional banners, payment receipts, accounts, black suitcases that were planned to be used by the pilgrims, umrah handbags, batik cloth and other umrah equipment, the victim's passport, and umrah savings books," he said.
The Lampung Police appealed to the people of Sidodadi, Central Lampung Regency, who felt that they had applied or made payments through this illegal travel to immediately report to the Lampung Police.
"For his actions, the suspect PW was charged with fraud and embezzlement with a maximum sentence of six years in prison and a fine of up to Rp. 6 billion," he said.
