JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto is said to be ready to withdraw Indonesia from membership of the Peace Council or Board of Peace if the institution is considered not to provide real benefits for the Palestinian independence struggle.
The statement was made by the Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Anwar Iskandar after a meeting with the President at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Tuesday, February 3.
Anwar said, in principle, MUI supports Indonesia's involvement in the international forum as long as its membership brings benefits, especially for the Palestinian people.
"As long as the commitment is for the benefit, of course it's not a problem. But there is a promise, if it is not beneficial, Indonesia will leave," said Anwar.
In a meeting with a number of Islamic community organizations, he said, Prabowo emphasized the government's commitment to utilize membership in the Board of Peace as a means of fighting for the independence of Palestine in its entirety and sovereignty.
In addition, Indonesia is also said to be encouraging humanitarian efforts to help the Palestinian people, especially in Gaza which is still plagued by conflict.
According to Anwar, the institution formed by the United States and involving a number of countries, including Islamic countries, is expected to be a forum for cooperation in creating world peace.
However, if later the organization is judged not to provide benefits for Palestinians or global peace, Indonesia along with other Islamic countries is ready to consider withdrawing.
"If it turns out that it does not provide benefits and goodness for Palestine and world peace, the Islamic countries in it will leave the Board of Peace," he said.
Previously, MUI had asked the government to review the decision to join the Board of Peace. Deputy Chairman of MUI Cholil Nafis assessed that this step has the potential to not be in the interests of Palestine.
"Indonesia joining the Board of Peace is clearly not siding with Palestine," Cholil said via the X social media account, Wednesday, January 28.
