JAKARTA - The Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched attacks on two cities in western and southern Sudan on Monday, February 2 local time.

Military sources and witnesses told AFP on Tuesday that an air strike by the army hit western Sudan in the city of Zalingei, one of five capitals of the vast state and controlled by the RSF militia.

Two witnesses said they saw "smoke and fire" coming from a building there.

Confirming the attack, a military source said the building was a warehouse operated by the RSF militia.

Meanwhile, in southern Sudan, specifically in Kordofan, RSF drone attacks hit the city of Dilling, an area that the Sudanese army recently took control of.

The drone strike hit a building housing a government humanitarian aid agency, the source added, without giving further details.

Dilling is currently the front line of the exchange between the RSF and the Sudanese army since the war broke out in April 2023.

Military sources said that after opening two corridors around Dilling last week, the Sudanese army continued to advance towards Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan.

According to the UN, around 80 percent or 147,000 people have fled Kadugli.

Since the fall of the last Sudanese army stronghold in Darfur or precisely in El Fasher in October 2025, RSF forces have continued to advance and launch attacks on Kordofan, a vast and fertile region in southern Sudan.

The Secretary-General of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), Jan Egeland, said the Kordofan region is "the most dangerous and neglected front line of the Sudanese war."

"The whole city is suffering from famine, forcing families to flee without taking anything," he said in a statement yesterday Monday, after visiting the area.

"This is a man-made disaster, and it is getting closer to a nightmare scenario," he continued.
