BMKG Warns of Potential Heavy Rain in NTT until February 4, 2026

KUPANG - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminds people in the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province to be aware of the potential for heavy rain that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds on February 2-4, 2026.

"Be alert for the potential for moderate to heavy rain in the NTT area until February 4, 2026," said Prakirawan Cuaca Stasiun Meteorologi Kelas II El Tari Kupang Nanik Tresnawati in Kupang, Antara, Monday, February 2.

He explained that this condition was influenced by the active Low Atmospheric Waves and Rossby Waves which had an impact on weather dynamics in the NTT region.

In addition, Tropical Cyclone 98P was observed around the Darwin area, northern Australia, which supported the formation of a meeting area and wind deceleration so as to increase the potential for rain in NTT.

"The seeds of Tropical Cyclone 98P are expected to move westwards and in the next 24 hours have a low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone," he said.

He said on Monday (2/2), the areas that are potentially experiencing moderate to heavy rain accompanied by short-lived strong winds include Kupang Regency, South Central Timor, North Central Timor, Alor, Ende, East Flores, West Manggarai, Manggarai, East Manggarai, Ngada, Nagekeo, and Sikka.

"On Tuesday (3/2), similar weather potential is expected to occur only in the Alor Regency area," he said.

Meanwhile, on Thursday (4/2), moderate to heavy rain is expected to occur in the Kupang Regency, Rote Ndao, West Manggarai, Southwest Sumba, West Sumba, and East Sumba.

"Be aware of the effects of moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds because they have the potential to cause hydrometeorological disasters," he added.

For this reason, BMKG has issued a three-day early warning in the NTT region which is valid on February 2-4, 2026.

Nanik added that the public can contact the 24-hour service at the number [phone] and WhatsApp [phone], as well as downloading the INFO BMKG application on the Appstore and Playstore to obtain official and up-to-date weather information.

Furthermore, the BMKG Geophysical Station Kupang recorded that in the period from January 1-31, 2026, lightning activity occurred in the Kupang City area with 3,871 strikes. The most lightning activity occurred on January 19, 2026 with a total of 2,875 strikes.
