MATARAM - The Government of West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB) has increased vigilance against lumpy skin disease (LSD) or a bumpy skin disease similar to smallpox that has the potential to attack cattle and buffalo.

Head of Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health, NTB Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Service, Muslih, said the disease not only has an impact on animal health, but also has the potential to cause economic losses and disrupt livestock distribution.

"Vigilance must be further increased in line with the development of LSD cases in various regions of Indonesia," said Muslih in his statement in Mataram, Antara, Friday, January 30.

Muslih emphasized that prevention was the top priority through strengthening cross-sectoral coordination and the formation of a vigilance team. The local government also carried out active and ongoing surveillance, especially in border areas and livestock traffic points, as part of the early detection system.

LSD is a contagious disease in cattle and buffaloes which is characterized by the appearance of lumps on the skin, accompanied by fever, weakened body condition, and decreased appetite. This disease can be transmitted through vectors such as mosquitoes and flies.

A number of regions have previously reported finding cases of cattle infected with LSD, one of which is in Jembrana Regency, Bali. In response to this, the Ministry of Agriculture has distributed hundreds of emergency vaccine doses equipped with animal drugs, multivitamins, disinfectants, and supporting health equipment.

Head of the NTB Livestock and Animal Health Service, Muhamad Riadi, said NTB is one of the national beef cattle centers with a fairly high level of livestock traffic out of the area, so it requires stricter surveillance and disease control.

He instructed the animal health support team at the sub-district level to continue to monitor the condition of the people's livestock to avoid the transmission of LSD disease.
