Member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives Syamsu Rizal responded to Indonesia's joining the Board of Peace (BOP) for Gaza, which was formed by the President of the United States, Donald Trump. Iamenegaskan, Indonesia does not need to become a permanent member of the BOP.

According to him, permanent membership will actually burden Indonesia financially because it has to pay a contribution of 1 billion US dollars or around Rp. 16.9 trillion.

"Indonesia must calculate carefully. There is no urgency for us to become a permanent member and spend that much money," Syamsu Rizal told reporters, Tuesday, January 27.

He also reminded that BOP is not an official organization under the auspices of the United Nations (UN). According to him, the UN Security Council resolution 2803 legitimizes BOP, but it is not an organ of the UN.

In addition, said Syamsu Rizal, the BOP was formed with a limited purpose, namely to solve the Palestinian issue, especially Gaza. If this goal is achieved, then according to him, the organization no longer has a significant role.

"If the Palestinian issue is resolved, then what is the strategic function of BOP? Don't let Indonesia be trapped in an organization whose benefits are very limited," he said.

Furthermore, Syamsu Rizal emphasized that Indonesia must remain committed to the principle of free and active foreign policy and consistently support Palestinian independence. He also emphasized that Indonesia's participation in any international forum must be based on this goal.

"Indonesia's participation can only be for one purpose, namely to make Palestine independent. If this organization is actually used by the United States and Israel to legitimize or annex Palestinian territory, then Indonesia must strongly reject it," he said.

The PKB legislator also firmly rejected Israel's entry into the BOP. According to him, this is contrary to the logic of justice and peace.

"Israel is the party that has been colonizing Palestine. How can a colonial country enter the Peace Council, while the colonized Palestine is actually outside the organization?" he said.

Syamsu Rizal reminded, Indonesia must be firm and consistent in rejecting all forms of colonization of Palestine, whether through military, political, or diplomatic mechanisms disguised in international forums.

"Our constitution clearly rejects colonialism over the world. Therefore, Indonesia must not compromise on any effort that weakens the struggle of the Palestinian people," he concluded.
