JAKARTA - Basarnas has deployed special equipment to search for miners who are suspected to be trapped in a mining area in Pongkor, Bogor Regency, West Java, following the condition of the mine which is considered high risk.

SAR Mission Coordinator (SMC) Desiana Kartika Bahari said the assessment results showed that the conditions inside the mine area were unstable and required a special search method.

"The structure inside the mine is weathered in several points and the air quality is not suitable, so the team must use special equipment such as SCBA and SAR equipment for limited space," he said in a statement in Jakarta, Tuesday, quoted by Antara.

Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) is a SAR equipment for limited space because of the narrow mining path with a diameter of approximately one meter.

The SAR operation was carried out after Basarnas received a report from the community on Sunday, January 18 regarding the alleged trapping of a number of local miners. The incident is estimated to have occurred since Tuesday, January 13 in the early hours after smoke appeared from inside the mining area.

According to Desiana, the excavation location is a mine area that has been closed by PT Antam, so the search process began with a thorough assessment to identify potential hazards for SAR personnel. "The mine area is a location that has been closed by PT Antam," he said.

Today, Tuesday, January 20, the SAR team was divided into two groups, namely the search team tasked with entering the excavation area and the standby team responsible for evacuation and medical support.

The SAR operation involved Basarnas rescue personnel through the Jakarta SAR Office and the Basarnas Special Group (BSG) together with the Emergency Response Team (ERT) of PT Antam Pongkor, with the support of adequate SAR equipment.

Based on temporary information, there are three miners who are still in the mining area, namely AK, AJ, and AD, all of them are residents of Urug Village, Sukajaya District, Bogor Regency.

Basarnas emphasized that the search and rescue operations were carried out by prioritizing the safety of personnel and following standard operating procedures in the face of limited space conditions and dangerous environments.
