JAKARTA - The European Union has accepted an invitation to join the Gaza Peace Council formed by US President Donald Trump, with the bloc's spokesman saying peace was their priority.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has accepted an invitation to join the US-led Peace Council aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza, a spokesman announced on Monday.
Speaking to reporters, spokesman Anouar El Anouni said the bloc had accepted the invitation and was ready to discuss with the US and other partners how they could contribute to the global effort to bring peace to Gaza.
"We have unique expertise and multidimensional tools that are capable of responding to the situation in Gaza," he said, stressing the EU's readiness to act in the areas of security, diplomacy and humanitarianism, as reported by Anadolu (20/1).
Meanwhile, European Commission spokesman Olof Gill confirmed that von der Leyen had received the invitation and was in close contact with European leaders on geopolitical issues.
"The priority for us is peace, to achieve peace, and we want to contribute to a global plan approach to ending the conflict in Gaza," Gill said.
Previously, the White House announced the formation of the Peace Council last Friday to "play a critical role in fulfilling" the 20 points of President Trump's plan to permanently end the Israeli war in Gaza and rebuild the region, as well as "provide strategic oversight, mobilize international resources, and ensure accountability as Gaza transitions from conflict to peace and development."
The US also formed a National Committee for Gaza Administration to implement the second phase of the "Trump Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict," a founding Executive Council, and the Gaza Executive Council to support the transition framework.
The White House has contacted various figures around the world to sit in what is called the "Peace Council", which is headed by the US President, as reported by Al Arabiya from Reuters.
A number of world leaders have reportedly accepted the US's offer to join the council, which is expected to begin work during the second phase of the peace plan.
Prior to the announcement of the formation of this council, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff last week announced the start of the second phase of the ceasefire in Gaza with a focus on demilitarization, the formation of a technocratic government for transition and reconstruction.
