JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government continues the Weather Modification Operation (OMC) into the fourth day as a mitigation step for the impact of extreme weather and potential hydrometeorological disasters in Jakarta and its surroundings.
The implementation of OMC today was carried out through three sorties of CASA 212 A-2105 aircraft flights based at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, East Jakarta.
Head of the BPBD DKI Jakarta Provincial Disaster Data and Information Center, Mohamad Yohan, said that all the implementation of the fourth OMC was based on the latest meteorological analysis and continuous monitoring of atmospheric dynamics.
"The fourth day of weather modification operations is focused on the waters and the southern area of Jakarta as a strategic step to reduce the potential for high-intensity rain in the DKI Jakarta mainland area," Yohan said in a statement, Monday, January 19.
This operation involves the DKI Jakarta Provincial BPBD, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Indonesian Air Force, and PT Rekayasa Atmosphere Indonesia. The first sorting was carried out in the morning with a focus on cloud seeding in the northern waters of Jakarta.
The seeding was carried out at an altitude of 8,000 to 12,000 feet using 800 kilograms of seed material Sodium Chloride (NaCl). This strategy is aimed at dissolving the rain cloud before moving to the mainland, so that the rainfall is concentrated in the sea.
The second batch again targeted the waters north and northwest of Jakarta. The seeding was carried out at an altitude of 9,000-10,000 feet with a target of Cumulus type clouds. Observation results showed that the cloud had a base of about 4,000 feet and a top of up to 11,000 feet.
In this sorting, 800 kilograms of NaCl were again used to optimize the decay of rain clouds in the water area. In the afternoon, the third sorting was carried out with a focus on the Bogor and Depok air areas.
The seeding was carried out at an altitude of 5,000-6,000 feet using 800 kilograms of Calcium Oxide (CaO) seed material. This step is aimed at controlling the rain cloud in the southern region that has the potential to move to Jakarta.
He explained that the location and height of the seeding were adjusted to the wind direction, cloud type, and potential growth of rain clouds monitored by BMKG.
BPBD DKI Jakarta together with BMKG and TNI AU will continue to conduct daily evaluations and coordination during the implementation of OMC to ensure the effectiveness of extreme weather mitigation efforts.
"The DKI Jakarta Provincial BPBD appeals to the public to remain vigilant against the potential for moderate to heavy rain that may be accompanied by lightning/thunder and strong winds, and also to maintain environmental cleanliness and water channels," said Yohan.
