JAKARTA - French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that his country would send land, sea, and air assets to Greenland in the next few days to strengthen the military unit that had arrived on the island to participate in military exercises, amid the United States (US) territorial claims.

The Danish Ministry of Defense previously stated that it would strengthen the military presence in Greenland with allies of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), including by increasing the intensity of military exercises in the region. Macron confirmed France's involvement in the exercise.

BFMTV broadcaster reported, citing military sources, that about 15 French soldiers had arrived in Greenland.

"The first French military team is already on the ground and will be reinforced with land, air and sea assets in the coming days," Macron told military personnel at a French air base near Marseille.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Greenland should be part of the US, citing the island's strategic importance to national security and the defense of the free world, including from China and Russia.

Danish and Greenlandic authorities have warned the US not to take over the island, stressing their hope that it will respect shared territorial integrity.

Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953. The island remained part of the Kingdom of Denmark after gaining autonomous status in 2009, with the authority to govern itself and determine policy in its own country.
