JAKARTA - Minister of Forestry (Menhut) Raja Juli Antoni said his party strengthened forest protection through a moratorium on logging and transportation and regulation of wood utilization for post-disaster communities in Sumatra.

Menhut explained that the Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) through the Directorate General of Sustainable Forest Management (Dirjen PHL) has issued a circular regarding the use of driftwood for post-flood disaster recovery that can be used by the community and not for commercial activities.

"This policy regulates that the use of driftwood is used for emergency disaster handling, post-disaster rehabilitation and recovery, as well as material assistance for affected communities on the basis of safety and humanity, as long as it is not for commercial activities," said Menhut as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, January 13.

To strengthen the Circular, Raja Antoni has issued Minister's Decree Number 863 of 2025 on December 29.

He said, this SK confirms the utilization of driftwood due to flood disasters as a material resource for rehabilitation and post-disaster recovery in the Aceh Province, North Sumatra Province, and West Sumatra Province.

In addition, the moratorium on logging and transporting wood is also carried out, so that no legal documents are issued for forest products.

"This moratorium policy is through the issuance of the Director General of PHL on December 1, 2025 regarding the Closing of the SIPUHH Access Rights (Forest Revenue Management Information System) for the Utilization of Natural Growing Wood in PHAT (Land Rights Holders)," said Menhut.

"In addition, the issuance of the Director General of Forestry Letter dated December 8 regarding the moratorium on logging and transporting wood so that no legal documents are issued for forest products," he said.

Raja Antoni also said that this rule was made in response to the flood disaster which showed a decrease in the function of forest protection.

In addition, the Ministry of Forestry also carried out identification and data collection of the findings with the cooperation of the National Police and local governments.

"This was made in response to the flood disaster which showed a decrease in the protective function of forests due to the pressure of utilization and illegal activities, preventing the occurrence of 'wood washing' and maintaining sensitivity among the community affected by the disaster," said Menhut.
